IIW2006--Doc Searls

Iiworkshop2006podcast_4 Here's one of the podcasts I did this during the Internet Identity Workshop 2006. It's with Doc Searls--conference organizer (well, sort of, as he explains), well-known blogger and co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto, editor of Linux Journal, and more.

In this interview he talks in various ways about the "Intention Economy," which is something he has been discussing and, obviously, thinking about recently. It's his riff or improv--as in jazz--on the idea of "attention," which is something that Steve Gillmor, among others, has been talking about for some while, along with "gestures": you can listen to Gillmor talk about both attention and gestures here.

Docsearls_1I call it an interview, and it is, but it's also a conversation, one that ranges over a number of topics clustered around a new arrangement of markets in which the consumer's intentions drive. Doc explains, for instance, his version of "Sympathy for the Devil," which in this case is WalMart.

He also talks about an idea he has that's in a very early stage for a group modeled on Creative Commons but one that advocates for consumer intentions--if I've misstated that purpose, Doc, please let me know. I find the idea fascinating, though in its embryonic state, I'm not sure what it might look like when mature. For me, it all adds up to: newly powerful consumers whose intentions are embodied in identities that are exercised over the net.

All this aside, I must point out that Doc is an entertaining talker, someone whose consciousness is alive with the way things have been, are, and might be in the wild world of the Internet. In other words, he's fun to listen to.

The interview is about 48 minutes long. Here it is:
